Sophia L. Peterson

Professor Peterson taught and conducted research on international relations, global issues, and international news coverage. She is the author of Conflict, Communication, and Mutual Threat: Sino-Soviet-American Relations (Monograph Series in World Affairs, University of Denver, 1979). Her scholarly articles have appeared in Public Opinion Quarterly, Studies in Comparative International Development, Journalism Quarterly, Sage International Yearbook of Foreign Policy Studies, and Communication in International Politics. Professor Peterson's outstanding teaching and service has been recognized by many awards. Along with being designated the original recipient of the Eberly College's Outstanding Service Award (in 1975), Professor Peterson has been named WVU Foundation Outstanding Teacher, Gold Medal Finalist CASE Professor of the Year, Eberly College Outstanding Teacher, Heebink Award for Distinguished State Service, Mary Catherine Award for Outstanding Service to Women, and a WVU Outstanding Teacher. Professor Peterson was the founder of and director of the International Studies major and founder/director of the West Virginia Consortium for Faculty and Course Development in International Studies (FACDIS) for which she accepted the G. Theodore Mitau Award for State Colleges and Universities. In 1997 Professor Peterson received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Wheeling Jesuit University.
